This image of two sisters having a "pretend" tea party captures
a special moment between them. Generations of children
have experienced similar moments, whether with siblings
or best friends. The design is inspired by an original 19th
century silhouette that was cut freehand with scissors from
black paper. Such cutting, or scherenschnitte, was practiced
by European artisans in the 16th century. The art form made
its way to Colonial America in the 18th century and was used
widely for creating silhouette portraits as well as depicting

iron central gateway found at the ground level between the two
main staircases. Known as the Harp Gate, Drayton family lore

Although a number of flags are associated with the history of Texas, the
four flags featured in this kit are particularly significant. In the so-called
Alamo Flag, "Texians" placed 1824 at its center as a means of protesting
the steady erosion of rights granted by the Mexican constitution of that year.
The First Flag of the Republic included the single white star that came to
signify the Texas "Lone Star" perspective. The Third Flag of the Republic
became the official state flag of Texas when it joined the United States. The
"Come and take it" flag includes the image of a cannon that Texas defenders

This image of a mother and child by Michael Schwab captures the
special moment when, at the end of a busy day, evening prayers are
said. Generations of children have knelt with their mothers to repeat
the familiar words of "Now I lay me down to sleep...," or a similar
bedtime prayer. For nearly three decades, Michael Schwab has built
a reputation as one of America's most recognized and best-loved
graphic artists. His use of large flat areas of color, dramatic
perspectives, and bold yet simple designs make his work easily
recognizable. During that same time period, The Posy Collection has
been interpreting our major historical sites, prominent natural
wonders, and selected graphic arts in cross stitch. This kit is a result
of a combination of their efforts aimed at "preserving our story in

manuscript at Ephrata Cloister. Brothers and Sisters from
the community decorated their choral books with beautiful
illuminations often using flowers and doves depicting the heavenly
home they were anticipating. One of America's earliest religious
communities, Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German
settlers seeking spiritual goals. They became known for their
music, calligraphy, architecture, and printing. At the zenith of the
community in the 1740s and 1750s, about 300 members worked
and worshipped at the Cloister. Today, Ephrata Cloister is a historic
site, administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
Commission and interprets this piece of William Penn's "Holy

Charles Morgan

The Charles W. Morgan is the last surviving wooden whaling ship from
the great days of sail. Built in 1841 in New Bedford, Massachusetts,
the Morgan was retired after a successful 80-year whaling career.
From 1921 to 1941, she was placed on exhibit in South Dartmouth,
Massachusetts, before being moved to her present berth at Mystic
Seaport. She has served as an educational historic resource, a film and
media star, and a porthole into America's rich and diverse history. She
is also registered as a National Historic Landmark. Mystic Seaport
is an appropriate home for the Morgan. Since 1929, this historical
shipbuilding area has become America's leading maritime museum,
a dynamic educational institution designed to preserve America’s

Before magnetic compasses became available in the 13th century,
seafaring captains used a diagram called a wind rose to gauge the
direction of the prevailing breezes. With the advent of the compass,
this diagram evolved into the compass rose, highlighting the cardinal
directions and often including as many as 32 "points" or directional
arrows in all. When printed onto nautical charts, the compass rose
provided the directional reference needed to set accurate courses.
This enabled the early transatlantic explorers to sail with confidence.
The compass rose in this kit includes points for 16 directions. North,
east, south, and west are indicated by the main red points, while the

Locust Grove was built near Louisville, Kentucky, around 1790 as the
home of William and Lucy Clark Croghan. George Rogers Clark, the
Revolutionary War hero who was also Lucy's brother, spent the last nine
years of his life here. Today, Locust Grove is a registered National Historic
Landmark and is administered by Historic Locust Grove, Inc. The museum
features a significant collection of antique samplers, whose motifs have
been incorporated into this kit. Surrounding the image of the Locust Grove

Mayflower

The original Mayflower carried the Pilgrims to New England in
1620. After a voyage of 66 days, the 102 weary travelers finally
sighted land at the tip of Cape Cod. They scouted for a suitable
place to settle and finally decided upon Patuxet, known to the
English as Plymouth. In 1955-7, a reproduction, Mayflower II, was
built in Brixham, England. She was intended as a gift to America
in appreciation of US assistance to Great Britain during WWII. A
specially selected crew sailed the ship across the Atlantic, arriving
in June of 1957. Mayflower II is now part of Plimoth Plantation, the

The 33-star U. S. Flag flew at Fort Sumter during the
opening battle of the Civil War. The stars represented
even those states that had seceded from the Union.
The Stars and Bars was the first national flag of the Confederate
States of America. Its seven stars represented the
seven states that had seceded by March, 1861, when the
flag was adopted.
The Palmetto Flag was adopted as the official state flag
for South Carolina on January 26, 1861. The palmetto tree
commemorated the role of Fort Moultrie in the first major

The Bonnie Blue Flag was the unofficial banner of
independence for the Southern states. The single star
represented secession, and the field of blue stood for
independence. However, the Stars and Bars was selected
as the first official flag of the Confederacy. The
seven stars represented the original Confederate states
of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia,
Louisiana, and Texas. The best-known flag was the
Battle Flag, also known as the Southern Cross. Carried
by Confederate troops in the field, this flag included 13
stars, representing the original seven states, plus Virginia,
Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Stars for

This is an example of a marking sampler, usually one of the
first pieces a girl did in preparation for her duties as a wife and
mother. It taught her to stitch the alphabet so she could mark
her family's linens with initials and the date. Marking linens
allowed the woman to keep track of her linens. She could
rotate them to prevent them wearing out and, should they be
sent out for laundering, it would insure their prompt return.
This adaptation was designed for the Nantucket Historical
Association in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and is as close to

Lydia G. Cary was born on Nantucket on March 16, 1835 and died
on the island on February 23, 1905. She was the daughter of James
Cary and Margaret (Hussey) Cary. Her grandfather, James Cary, was
captain of the Rose, one of the most successful vessels in Nantucket's
China trade between 1803 and 1807. Lydia's original sampler is
now part of the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association

Merium Patrick's sampler is a form typical of Shaker schoolgirl
needlework. It is plain and unadorned, quite a contrast to the elegant
pictorial embroidery practiced in the world. Samplers were part of
a young woman's instruction, even in Shaker communities. The
simple lettering practiced on Shaker samplers was also used to mark
linen, bedding, and clothing for the community.
