Lydia Cary was born on Nantucket on March 16, 1835 and died on the island on February 23, 1905. She was the daughter of James Cary and Margaret (Hussey) Cary. Her grandfather, James Cary, was captain of the Rose, one of the most successful vessels in Nantucket's China trade between 1803 and 1807. Lydia's original sampler is now part of the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
