Mary Sawyer was born in 1806 and grew up on a farm near Sterling, Massachusetts. When she was about 10 years old, she found a newborn lamb that was cold and nearly dead. She brought it into the house and nursed it back to health. As a result, the lamb took to Mary and began following her about. One day, it followed her to school, prompting John Roulstone, one of her schoolmates, to write a short poem that started out with the line, "Mary had a little lamb..." Called the Redstone School, the building was later purchased by Henry Ford and relocated to the property of Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury. Adapted for counted cross stitch from an original painting by Christopher Gurshin, this project depicts the structure as it appeared in the early-1800s.

Black Canyon
Black Canyon; The Posy Collection; Kit includes: fabric, floss, needle, chart, instructions and color photo of finished project.

Rising 2,250 feet from the canyon floor in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park , the Painted Wall stands against the forces of erosion as the highest cliff in Colorado. Like threads running through a piece of fabric, pink stripes lace the precipice. Made of pegmatite, a type of granite, this once molten magma squeezed into the main rock of the canyon like toothpaste from a tube. Starting two million years ago, the Gunnison River began grinding away at the rock, slicing down slowly as it carved the canyon. Today the pink pegmatite reveals many shapes throughout the canyon, but at the Painted Wall people often see dragons lifting off as they ascend to the top of the cliff.; 5" x 6"; Aida; 18ct

Billed as "the largest salt water natatorium in the world," the Sutro Baths opened to the public in 1896. Featuring six salt water pools with water at different temperatures, as well as a spring-fed fresh water pool, all enclosed beneath a three-acre roof of glass panels, the complex also boasted more than 500 dressing rooms, a concert hall, a museum, seating for 8,000 spectators, and, for a time, an ice skating rink. Constructed next to the Cliff House, this comprehensive amusement facility was the brainchild of Adolph Sutro, an immigrant from Prussia and one-time mayor of San Francisco. His dream was create a site that would provide affordable and wholesome activity for the people of nearby San Francisco. The pools were closed in 1953, and the entire structure was destroyed by fire in 1966. Today, Cliff House visitors can see the Sutro Baths ruins and imagine the excitement experienced by adults and children alike, years ago.; 7" x 4.5"; Aida; 18ct
